We’ve all seen the classic image of power plants from the early industrial age: giant furnaces burning coal to generate steam power while giant plumes of smoke billow up from smokestacks that tower high above the city. This is what it took to keep factories running, refineries smelting, and electricity humming to anyone who wanted it.

However, the last 150 years of coal-fired power plants have produced numerous technologies to increase their output while cleaning up their act – all while keeping power affordable for public consumption.

A few of these changes include:

Implementing Emission Control Tech. From scrubbers to Activated Carbon Injection (ACI) systems, power plants are finding ways to mitigate their emissions by removing pollutants before they reach the atmosphere. Motus Group works with plants to implement static mixer technology to ensure the dispersal of sorbents (typically Powdered Activated Carbon – PAC, Trona, and Lime) is uniform and more efficient.

Leveraging New Additives. The distribution of sorbents is only one part of the equation. Using the correct sorbent or additive is ultimately what results in clean coal technology – which drastically reduces the harmful elements that are released into the air.  Most pollutants can only be captured if appropriately oxidized or charged, so it is critical to know what your system needs to operate as cleanly as possible.  Motus Group can offer oxidation additives and flue gas conditioning chemicals to help you get to the right solution.

Emission Capture and Storage. Exactly what it sounds like – some power plants capture pollutants like carbon dioxide and store them in underground, secure geological formations. This is commonly known as carbon capture and storage, and while it keeps pollutants out of the air, it can be expensive to maintain.

Improving Operational Processes. Just as we keep our cars tuned so it uses gasoline more efficiently, plants that keep their systems up to date and calibrated will make the most out of what they consume. As a part of our preventative maintenance plans, Motus Group factors in a routine recalibration of conveyors and scales so you are getting more out of your fuels.

Investing in sustainable energies. Power companies all over the world are increasing their investments in sustainable and renewable energy sources – like wind and solar – because they create little air pollution. However, these companies are still figuring out how to scale sufficiently enough to meet not only today’s energy demands but what our future might require (electric cars, anyone?). Our mission is to help today’s power generators get the most out of what they produce while tomorrow’s solutions continue to mature.
